Auguste Brouet was a French etcher and book illustrator who was born and lived his entire life in Paris. He came from a poor background and began his artistic training in evening drawing classes. Around 1902, he started creating original etchings, often depicting the daily lives of the lower social classes and the shabby yet picturesque surroundings of his native city. His work gained significant popularity in the 1920s, both in France and the United States. Brouet's style is characterized by an expressive and loose drawing technique, combined with a masterful use of light and shadow.
