Coin Identification and History

Coin: 1984-P Jefferson Nickel Mint: Philadelphia (indicated by the "P" mint mark to the right of Jefferson's bust) Composition: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel Designer: Felix Schlag

History: This coin is a Jefferson Nickel, a design that has been a mainstay of U.S. currency since 1938. The obverse (front) features a profile of the 3rd U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. The reverse (back) displays his Virginia home, Monticello.

The "P" mint mark signifies that this specific coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, one of the oldest mints in the United States.  The coin is in "Brilliant Uncirculated" (BU) condition. This means it has never been used in daily commerce and retains its original mint luster, free from the wear and tear seen on pocket change. While the coin is common, finding one in pristine, uncirculated condition like this one is what makes it a collectible piece. For collectors, its value is tied directly to this high-grade condition.
