Description

1920s Porcelain Clock Marked Foreign British Collectible - Not Tested Appears in Good Condition Significant Wear Visible, See Photos - Measures 9 1/4" H x 7" W ... "Foreign" was a requirement of the UK Merchandise Marks Act of 1926 - clocks made abroad would bear the Foreign legion instead of the actual country of origin. Your clock's case was probably British made, with the movement and other components being imported from Germany.

This 1920s Porcelain Mantel Clock is a classic example of European export decorative arts from the interwar period. The case features a molded rococo-style silhouette with a "crazed" or crackled glaze finish, a common aging characteristic in vintage ceramics. The central hand-painted scene depicts a romantic bucolic tableau of a shepherd and shepherdess, a popular pastoral theme designed to evoke 18th-century European elegance. Historically, the "Foreign" mark on the base is a significant legal identifier; it was a requirement of the UK Merchandise Marks Act of 1926, which mandated that products manufactured outside the British Empire be labeled as "Foreign" to distinguish them from domestic British goods.
