Description

1927 Buffalo Nickel in Fair Collectible Condition, See Photos. The 1927 Buffalo Nickel, a classic American coin designed by James Earle Fraser, holds a special place for many collectors due to its iconic imagery of a Native American profile on the obverse and an American bison (buffalo) on the reverse. Minted in Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S), its composition is 75% copper and 25% nickel. The Philadelphia mint produced the largest number of these coins in 1927, with a mintage of 37,981,000. The Denver mint struck 5,730,000, while the San Francisco mint had the lowest output at 3,430,000, making the "S" mint mark version generally more sought after by collectors. While heavily circulated 1927 nickels are relatively common and affordable, examples in higher grades, particularly uncirculated condition or those with the "S" mint mark, can command significantly higher values. The date on Buffalo nickels is prone to wear, so finding a 1927 specimen with a clear date and strong details adds to its desirability.
