The 1928 Buffalo Nickel is a popular and generally accessible coin within the revered Buffalo Nickel series. Minted at Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S) mints, its value is largely determined by its condition and mint mark. The Philadelphia issue, with a mintage of 23,411,000, is quite common in circulated grades, but uncirculated examples can still fetch respectable prices. The Denver (6,436,000 mintage) and San Francisco (6,936,000 mintage) issues are scarcer, particularly in higher grades, making them more desirable for collectors. While not known for any major error varieties like some other dates in the series, well-struck examples with full details on both the Native American portrait and the bison are highly prized. As with all Buffalo Nickels, the relief on the high points of the design, such as the bison's leg and the Native American's cheekbone, was prone to wear, making well-preserved examples a challenge to find and valuable to numismatists.
