1936 Buffalo Nickel in Fair Collectible Condition, See Photos. The 1936 Buffalo Nickel is a widely collected coin, marking a period when the United States was still navigating the Great Depression. Minted at Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S), the general availability of these coins in circulated condition makes them accessible to most collectors. However, the true gems are found in higher uncirculated grades, where the distinct features of James Earle Fraser's design – the Native American profile and the American bison – are sharply defined. While the Philadelphia issue had a very high mintage, making it relatively common, the Denver and San Francisco mints produced fewer, increasing their value in better conditions. The most famous and valuable variety for this year is the 1936-D "3 1/2 Legged" error, a highly sought-after coin where the front leg of the bison appears partially or entirely missing due to an over-polished die at the Denver Mint. This significant error makes the 1936-D a key date within the series, commanding substantial premiums among numismatists.
