Description
1946 Jefferson Nickel Coin Collectible - Very Fine condition, see photos. The 1946 Jefferson Nickel marks a significant turning point in American numismatics, as it was the first year the United States Mint returned to the original pre-war composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel. This followed the "War Nickel" era (1942–1945), which had utilized a silver-manganese-copper alloy to conserve nickel for military use. Struck in large quantities at the Philadelphia, Denver (D), and San Francisco (S) mints to meet the demands of a booming post-war economy, the 1946 issue is generally considered common. However, it is a favorite for variety hunters due to the 1946-D "D over Horizontal D" error and the 1946-S "S over D" mint mark variety, both of which are highly prized by collectors in any grade.
