Description
1978-P Lincoln Cent Uncirculated Excellent Condition, see photos. The 1978-P Lincoln Cent is a classic example of the Lincoln Memorial reverse series from the Philadelphia Mint (and indistinguishable West Point strikes) during the final years of the 95% copper composition. Designed by Victor David Brenner (obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln) and Frank Gasparro (reverse featuring the Lincoln Memorial with a tiny seated statue visible inside), the coin weighs 3.11 grams, measures 19 mm in diameter, and has a smooth plain edge. While circulated examples are worth only face value (or a few cents in melt value due to their copper content), high-grade uncirculated specimens—especially those graded MS66 Red or better by PCGS or NGC—can command premiums, with top examples reaching hundreds or even thousands of dollars at auction. Minor varieties like doubled-die obverses exist, but the 1978-P remains a common yet nostalgic piece for collectors, symbolizing the end of an era before the composition change to copper-plated zinc in 1982.
