1981 Topps Baseball Card David Smith Astros No 534 - Excellent condition, see photos. David Stanley Smith, more commonly known as Dave Smith, was a cornerstone of the Houston Astros' bullpen throughout the 1980s, establishing himself as one of the most reliable relief pitchers in franchise history. Drafted by Houston in 1976, Smith spent 11 of his 13 Major League seasons with the Astros (1980–1990), where he became a two-time All-Star in 1986 and 1990. Known for his deceptive changeup and calm demeanor on the mound, he anchored the team’s pitching staff during two of its most iconic postseason runs in 1980 and 1986. By the time he left for the Chicago Cubs in 1991, he had recorded 199 saves for Houston—a club record that stood until it was surpassed by Billy Wagner. He still holds the franchise record for the most games pitched (586) and maintains a career ERA of 2.67, cementing his legacy as a premier "fireman" of his era.
