1994 Topps Mac Suzuki Baseball Card No 9 - Mint condition, see photos. Makoto "Mac" Suzuki holds a unique place in baseball history as the first Japanese-born player to reach Major League Baseball without ever playing in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) leagues. After being expelled from high school in Japan at 16, he was sent to the United States and famously began his American journey as a "clubbie" or laundry boy for the Salinas Spurs. His 95-mph fastball eventually earned him a contract with the Seattle Mariners, and on July 7, 1996, he made his debut, becoming the first Japanese player in American League history. Throughout a six-season MLB career (1996–2002) that included stints with the Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies, and Milwaukee Brewers, the right-handed pitcher compiled a 16–31 record with 327 strikeouts. His most productive season came in 2000 with the Royals, where he threw nearly 189 innings and earned 8 wins, including a complete-game shutout. Suzuki eventually returned to Japan in 2003 to play for the Orix BlueWave, completing a reverse path that paved the way for future Japanese prospects to consider the American minor league system as a viable route to the majors.
