24k Gold Plated 1899 Indian Head Penny in Excellent Condition, See Photos. The 1899 Indian Head Cent featured in your photo is a fascinating example of a "third-party altered" collectible. While the coin itself is a genuine antique from the late 19th century, its brilliant, mirror-like finish is the result of a secondary 24k gold plating process. Originally minted in Philadelphia with a composition of 95% copper and a mintage of over 53 million, these coins were the workhorse of the American economy during the "Gilded Age." The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress—a design by James B. Longacre that remained a staple of U.S. currency from 1859 until it was replaced by the Lincoln Cent in 1909.
