Antique pre-Columbian era Nariño Art Pottery Bowl Handmade - Good Condition, Normal Wear given age ... See Photos - Measures 5 1/2" W x 3" H ... This Antique Nariño Pedestal Pottery Bowl is a classic example of Pre-Columbian artistry from the Capulí Complex, which flourished in the highlands of southern Colombia and northern Ecuador between 850 and 1500 AD. This piece is celebrated for its use of the "wax-resist" or negative painting technique, a complex multi-step process where a temporary protective layer (like wax) was applied to the light-colored clay before it was dipped in dark pigments. Once fired, the wax melted away to reveal the striking, light-on-dark geometric patterns you see here.

In good antique condition, this bowl features a characteristic shallow, flared dish set atop a stable pedestal base—a form often associated with ritual feasting or ceremonial offerings of chicha (fermented maize). The interior is decorated with a bold, repeating star or sunburst motif, while the exterior shows a beautiful, aged patina with natural mineral encrustations and surface wear commensurate with its remarkable age. It is a sophisticated addition to any collection of Latin American ethnographic art, offering a tangible connection to the spiritual and social traditions of the Andean highlands.
