Ben McDonald, a towering right-handed pitcher, entered Major League Baseball with immense expectations after being selected as the first overall pick in the 1989 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. A collegiate superstar at Louisiana State University, where he won the prestigious Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur baseball player, McDonald was known for his overpowering fastball and formidable presence on the mound. He spent the majority of his nine-year major league career with the Orioles before finishing with the Milwaukee Brewers. Though his professional career was often hampered by injuries and he didn't fully replicate his collegiate dominance, McDonald proved to be a solid and effective starter for several seasons, finishing with a career record of 78 wins and 70 losses and a 3.91 ERA. Following his retirement from baseball, he has found a successful second career as a respected and popular color commentator for the Baltimore Orioles on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and as a college baseball analyst for ESPN, where his insightful commentary is highly regarded.
