Dave Winfield Yankees Baseball 1983 Topps No. 770 in Near Mint Condition, See Photos. Dave Winfield's tenure with the New York Yankees, though marked by immense talent and impressive statistics, was perhaps most defined by his tumultuous relationship with owner George Steinbrenner. Signed to a then-record 10-year, $23 million contract in 1980, Winfield immediately became a cornerstone of the Yankees lineup, consistently delivering 100-RBI seasons and earning multiple Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards. He was an integral part of the team that won the American League pennant in 1981. However, a significant contract dispute over a cost-of-living clause, which Steinbrenner claimed he didn't fully understand, led to a very public and bitter feud. Steinbrenner notoriously dubbed Winfield "Mr. May" in contrast to Reggie Jackson's "Mr. October," openly criticized him in the press, and even attempted to find ways to discredit him. Despite this off-field drama, Winfield maintained a high level of play, making the All-Star team every season he played for the Yankees until 1988, and cementing his place as one of the era's premier five-tool players.
