Justin Maese was a highly regarded right-handed pitching prospect whose career was defined by a heavy sinking fastball and significant early success in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Drafted in the third round in 2015 out of Ysleta High School in El Paso—where he was a standout dual-sport athlete—Maese quickly climbed prospect rankings, peaking as the Blue Jays' #11 prospect in 2017. Known for his ability to generate extreme groundball rates, he utilized a 92–96 mph sinker and a hard slider to navigate through the lower levels of the minors, earning a Midwest League All-Star nod in 2017. However, his path to the majors was derailed by a series of injuries, including a major shoulder surgery in 2018 that forced him to miss significant time.
