Guion "Guy" Bluford Jr. holds a significant place in NASA history as the first African American astronaut to journey into space.  Selected as part of NASA's eighth astronaut class in 1978, Bluford's groundbreaking mission took place on August 30, 1983, aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger for the STS-8 mission.  A decorated Air Force pilot with combat experience in Vietnam, Bluford's expertise and skill earned him a spot on four Space Shuttle missions throughout his career.  During these missions, he contributed to various research projects and the deployment of satellites, logging over 688 hours in space.  His achievements paved the way for greater diversity in the astronaut corps and served as an inspiration for many aspiring astronauts.
