Pete Rose Baseball Card 1981 Fleer No. 1 in Very Good Condition, See Photos. The 1981 Fleer Pete Rose No. 1 baseball card holds a special place in hobby history, primarily because it marks the dawn of the "junk wax" era and the end of a decades-long monopoly. In 1981, Fleer (alongside Donruss) successfully won a lawsuit against Topps, allowing them to produce and sell their own baseball cards with gum, fundamentally changing the sports card industry forever. It is fitting that Fleer chose Pete Rose—one of the game's most prolific hitters and biggest superstars at the time—to be the premier Card #1 in their inaugural modern set. The card features a classic, no-nonsense close-up of Rose in his Philadelphia Phillies uniform, capturing the grit of "Charlie Hustle." On the reverse, the card is notable for dedicating almost the entire back to Rose's legendary, extensive major and minor league batting statistics up through his 1980 World Series-winning season. While it isn't an inherently rare or exceptionally valuable card today due to mass production, its historical significance as the face of Fleer's triumphant entry into the baseball card market makes it an iconic piece of cardboard Americana.
