Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), often hailed as the "Raphael of flowers," was a renowned French botanical artist and painter whose exquisite watercolors revolutionized floral illustration during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a family of painters in Saint-Hubert, in what is now Belgium, Redouté honed his skills in Flanders before moving to Paris in 1782, where he quickly gained favor among the French aristocracy. He served as the official court artist to Marie Antoinette, Empress Joséphine Bonaparte, and later Louis XVIII, producing over 2,100 botanical plates that captured the delicate intricacies of roses, lilies, and exotic plants with unparalleled precision and elegance. His masterpieces, including the seminal works Les Roses (1817–1824) and Les Liliacées (1802–1816), not only documented the opulent gardens of Malmaison but also elevated botanical art to a level of scientific accuracy and aesthetic refinement that influenced generations of illustrators. Despite surviving the tumultuous French Revolution and Napoleonic era, Redouté's legacy endures as a testament to the marriage of artistry and botany, with his prints remaining collector's treasures today.
