Tito Francona was a versatile left-handed outfielder and first baseman whose Major League career spanned 15 seasons (1956–1970) and nine different franchises. While he debuted with the Baltimore Orioles and finished second in the 1956 Rookie of the Year voting, he is most fondly remembered for his six-year tenure with the Cleveland Indians. His 1959 season remains a point of legend in Cleveland sports lore; despite not starting the season as a regular, he finished with a remarkable .363 batting average, which would have led the league had he not fallen just 34 at-bats short of qualifying for the batting title. An All-Star in 1961 and the American League doubles leader in 1960, Francona was a consistent offensive threat during the early 1960s. Beyond his own statistical achievements—including 1,395 hits and 125 home runs—he is celebrated as the patriarch of a major baseball family, being the father of two-time World Series-winning manager Terry Francona.
