Topps Hockey Card 1973 Ed Johnston Maple Leafs No 23 - Good condition, some wear visible, see photos. In May 1973, veteran goaltender Eddie Johnston joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, arriving from the Boston Bruins to complete a high-profile trade for legendary netminder Jacques Plante. Having recently won two Stanley Cups with the Bruins (1970 and 1972), the 38-year-old Johnston brought a wealth of experience to a transitioning Leafs roster that featured young stars like Lanny McDonald and Darryl Sittler. During the 1973–74 season, he shared goaltending duties with Doug Favell, appearing in 26 games and posting a respectable 12–9–4 record with a 3.09 goals-against average and one shutout. Although his tenure in Toronto lasted only a single season before he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in May 1974 for Gary Sabourin, his brief stay remains a notable footnote in Leafs history, as he was one of the last "original six" style workhorses to mind the net at Maple Leaf Gardens.
