After a 14-year career as the ace of the California/Anaheim Angels, veteran left-handed pitcher Chuck Finley signed with the Cleveland Indians as a high-profile free agent in late 1999. Brought in to be a dominant, top-of-the-rotation starter to help the team pursue a World Series title, his tenure lasted from 2000 to the middle of the 2002 season. His first year in Cleveland was a success, as he went 16-11 with a 4.17 ERA and was named to the All-Star team for the fifth and final time in his career. However, his following seasons were marred by injuries and inconsistency, including a difficult 2001 postseason where he lost both of his starts in the ALDS. Finley was eventually traded to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 2002 season, finishing his Cleveland career with a combined record of 28-29.
