Mélido Pérez was a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball for nine seasons, from 1987 to 1995. He played for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and New York Yankees. Over his career, Pérez compiled a win-loss record of 78-85, an earned run average (ERA) of 4.17, and 1,092 strikeouts. One of the most notable moments of his career came on July 12, 1990, when he pitched a rain-shortened no-hitter for the White Sox against the Yankees. However, this achievement was later disallowed when MLB changed the official definition of a no-hitter to require at least nine innings pitched. His best statistical season was in 1992 with the Yankees, when he posted a 2.87 ERA and struck out 218 batters, the second-highest total in the American League that year. His career was ultimately cut short by an elbow injury in 1995. After his baseball career, Pérez entered politics in his home country of the Dominican Republic and has served as the mayor of San Gregorio de Nigua.
