The 1898 Indian Head Cent is a classic example of late 19th-century American coinage, offering both historical significance and collectible appeal. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features the enduring image of Liberty wearing a Native American-style headdress, while the reverse displays a laurel wreath encircling the denomination “One Cent.” Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, over 49 million of these coins were produced, making the 1898 issue relatively common among the series. Composed of 95% copper, many examples have developed rich, attractive patinas over time, though higher-grade coins with original red or red-brown coloring are especially valued by collectors. As part of the Indian Head Cent series (1859–1909), the 1898 cent reflects a period of American growth and identity, and remains a popular piece for those interested in U.S. numismatic history.
