The 1918 Buffalo Nickel is a significant coin in the popular series, bearing the iconic Native American profile and American bison designs by James Earle Fraser. While Philadelphia Mint issues are relatively common in lower circulated grades, finding them in truly uncirculated condition with sharp strike is a considerable challenge. The Denver (1918-D) and San Francisco (1918-S) mint issues are generally scarcer, with the 1918-S being particularly low mintage and often weakly struck, making well-preserved examples highly sought after by collectors. However, the most famous and valuable variety of the 1918 Buffalo Nickel is the 1918/7-D overdate. This rare error, where the "7" from the previous year's die is visibly underneath the "8" of 1918, was produced at the Denver Mint and commands substantial premiums, especially in higher grades, making it a true key date in the Buffalo Nickel series.
