The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar represents a fascinating chapter in U.S. coinage, marking the unexpected revival and final year of a beloved series. Production of the Morgan Dollar, initially minted from 1878 to 1904, ceased for nearly two decades due to an oversupply of silver dollars. However, the Pittman Act of 1918 mandated the melting of millions of existing silver dollars to aid Great Britain during World War I, and then required their replacement. This legislative action led to the hurried reintroduction of the Morgan Dollar in 1921. Because the original master dies had been destroyed, Chief Engraver George T. Morgan had to create entirely new ones, resulting in a slightly different, often flatter appearance for the 1921 issues compared to earlier dates. Struck in immense quantities at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints (with Philadelphia producing the highest mintage), the 1921 Morgan Dollar is considered a common date, yet its historical significance as the last of its kind before the introduction of the Peace Dollar later the same year makes it a popular entry point for collectors. Its value largely depends on its condition and specific mint mark, but all 1921 Morgan Dollars contain a substantial 0.7734 troy ounces of 90% pure silver, giving them an inherent melt value that provides a baseline for their worth.
