The 1923 Buffalo Nickel is a fascinating coin for collectors, primarily due to the significant difference in mintage between its Philadelphia and San Francisco issues. The Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark) produced a substantial quantity, making it relatively common in lower circulated grades. However, acquiring a 1923-P in higher uncirculated conditions with a strong strike can still be a challenge. In contrast, the San Francisco Mint (1923-S) struck a much smaller number of these coins, making the 1923-S a considerably scarcer and more valuable date, especially in any grade above heavily circulated. As with other Buffalo Nickels, the date and the details of the Native American's portrait and the bison's leg are prone to wear, so well-preserved examples that clearly display these features are always in demand. While not known for any major prominent overdates or repunched mintmarks, some subtle varieties like the "Two Feathers" error (where one of the chief's feathers is missing) can also be found on 1923 Buffalo Nickels, adding another layer of interest for the dedicated numismatist.
