The 1937 Buffalo Nickel holds a prominent place in American numismatics, not only for its iconic design but also for one of the most famous and highly sought-after error coins in U.S. history: the 1937-D "3-Legged" Buffalo Nickel. While millions of these coins were minted at Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S), the 1937-D variety stands out due to a severe die-polishing error that effectively removed the front right leg of the bison on the reverse. This striking anomaly has made the 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel a key date for collectors, commanding significant premiums, especially in higher grades. Even outside of this error, 1937 Buffalo Nickels from all three mints are popular, with well-struck examples in uncirculated condition exhibiting sharp details on the Native American's portrait and the bison's fur being particularly desirable. The 1937 issue was also one of the last years the Buffalo Nickel was produced before its replacement by the Jefferson Nickel in 1938, adding to its historical significance.
