1939-D Wheat Penny Uncirculated, MS64 Grade see photos. The 1939-D Lincoln Wheat Penny is a classic pre-World War II issue that holds a distinct place in numismatic history due to its relatively low mintage. Struck at the Denver Mint on a standard 95% copper composition, only 15,160,000 of these cents were produced, making it the second-lowest mintage of the regular-issue Wheat Pennies from the 1930s (behind only the semi-key 1931-S). Because it was minted on the cusp of the wartime era—just before the industrial shifts and unique steel compositions of the early 1940s—finding examples with original, vibrant red luster or deep, clean brown surfaces is highly rewarding for collectors. While circulated grades remain highly accessible and affordable for standard sets, high-grade Mint State versions (MS65 and above) exhibit a sharp strike on Victor David Brenner’s iconic design, carrying a strong premium due to fewer surviving specimens escaping the heavy economic circulation of the late Great Depression.
