John Lowenstein carved out a distinctive 16-year Major League Baseball career (1970–1985), evolving from a versatile utility player into one of the game's premier platoon outfielders. Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1968 out of UC Riverside—where he was the school's first athletic scholarship recipient—the left-handed batter spent his early career as a "super-sub" for Cleveland and briefly the Texas Rangers. His career truly blossomed after the Baltimore Orioles claimed him off waivers late in 1978. Under legendary Orioles manager Earl Weaver, Lowenstein formed a highly productive left-field platoon with right-handed hitter Gary Roenicke. Annihilating right-handed pitching, Lowenstein enjoyed a spectacular peak in 1982 when he hit .320 with a career-high 24 home runs and recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage over 111 games. Renowned for his sharp wit and intelligence, he was an invaluable asset during Baltimore's postseason runs, delivering a dramatic 10th-inning pinch-hit home run in Game 1 of the 1979 ALCS and helping the Orioles capture a World Series championship in 1983. Lowenstein retired in 1985 with 116 home runs, 128 stolen bases, and a reputation as a clutch postseason performer.
