Rich Hebner put together a highly productive 18-year Major League Baseball career (1968–1985), forever remembered for his steady left-handed bat and one of the most unique offseason routines in sports history. Drafted 15th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1966, the Boston native made it to the big leagues for good in 1969 and quickly anchored third base for the powerhouse "Lumber Company" teams of the early 1970s. Hebner was a vital postseason performer, helping the Pirates secure five National League East division titles in six years and a World Series championship in 1971, a run highlighted by his clutch home runs off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, and Jim Palmer. A pure line-drive hitter with a habit of nervously tugging at his uniform in the batter’s box, he enjoyed a career-high 25 home runs in 1973 and routinely batted around the .290 to .300 mark during his prime. Beyond his stellar play for the Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago Cubs, Hebner earned pop-culture immortality for his offseason job working as a gravedigger for his family’s cemetery business, a gig that earned him the lifelong nickname "Grave Digger." He retired in 1985 with 1,694 hits, 203 home runs, 890 RBIs, and a robust .276 career batting average before transitioning into a lengthy, respected career as a major and minor league hitting coach and manager.
