1981 Topps Rick Sutcliffe Baseball Card No 191 in Excellent condition, see photos. Known affectionately as "The Red Baron," Rick Sutcliffe was a towering, fierce competitor whose 18-season Major League career (1976–1994) was defined by historic midseason dominance and resilience. Standing 6-foot-7, the right-hander made an immediate splash with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 17 games to capture the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1979.
After a brief stint with the Cleveland Indians—where he claimed the American League ERA title in 1982 ($2.96$)—Sutcliffe cemented his legacy following a monumental June 1984 trade to the Chicago Cubs. In one of the greatest midseason acquisitions in baseball history, he went an astonishing 16-1 with a 2.69 ERA down the stretch, single-handedly propelling the Cubs to their first division title and unanimously winning the National League Cy Young Award.
A three-time All-Star, the NL wins leader in 1987, and the recipient of the 1987 Roberto Clemente Award, Sutcliffe was also a rare weapon at the plate for a pitcher, hitting four career home runs and batting left-handed. He rounded out his impressive 171-win career with the Baltimore Orioles—where he memorably started the historic first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 1992—and the St. Louis Cardinals, before transitioning into a celebrated, long-standing career as a baseball color commentator.
