A durable and resilient right-handed pitcher, Bill Gullickson carved out a notable 14-season career in Major League Baseball, overcoming a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis in his rookie year to become a mainstay in several rotations. Breaking into the majors with the Montreal Expos in 1979, he made an immediate impact, finishing as the runner-up for the National League Rookie of the Year in 1980 and setting a then-rookie record by striking out 18 batters in a single game. Gullickson was a consistent winner for the Expos and later the Cincinnati Reds. After a two-year stint in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants, he returned to MLB and had the best season of his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1991, leading the American League with 20 victories. Throughout his career, which also included stops with the New York Yankees and Houston Astros, Gullickson was known for his control and workhorse mentality, finishing with a career record of 162 wins and 1,279 strikeouts while serving as an inspiration for athletes managing diabetes.
