Austin Productions, founded in Brooklyn in 1952, was a prolific producer of decorative art objects throughout the 1960s. They specialized in recreating classic sculptures, particularly those with a classical or mythological bent. These reproductions, often made from chalkware (a mix of plaster and chalk) or sometimes hydrocal (a type of gypsum cement), were popular additions to American homes of the era. While they produced a wide variety of figures, animals, and wall decor, some of their most recognizable pieces from the 1960s include their versions of "The Thinker" by Rodin (often with a faux bronze finish), various busts of historical figures, and playful interpretations of cherubs and putti. Austin Productions' work catered to a growing middle-class desire for affordable art that brought a touch of sophistication and culture into their homes. Although not considered "high art," these pieces offer a glimpse into the artistic tastes and interior design trends of the 1960s.
